Ryan cycles for orphans
Story
I'm originally from Botswana, so this project is very close to my heart. Having grown up there, I've seen the change as a result of HIV/AIDS. The life expectancy in 1995 was 65 years old and by 2005 it had dropped to 35. Its now estimated that there are over 200,000 children that are orphans resulting from HIV AIDS in Botswana. Statistics don't really hold much wieght compared to the stories of friends, workmates and family that have died asking the question 'who will look after my kids?'
I kickstarted the Botswana Orphan Project in 2007, and we've been focused on empowering our local partners to run their orphan care programs and to help them estabish orphan centres in the country. Through this partnership, we've built six orphan centres. We recognise that it takes a whole lot more than bricks and mortar to establish orphan centres so we're now focused on providing support for teachers and food whilst pursuing financial sustainability.
We're all volunteers at the Botswana Orphan Project, which means that you're the hero... we (BOP) are just facilitators of an awesome community of people, wanting to make this world a more caring place. So, please join our community and share in the amazing stories of changed lives.
Below is a bit more of my story:
Activity
Botswana Orphan Project ( Helplink Australia Inc)
The Botswana Orphan Project is a non-profit entity focused on providing support for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS in Botswana. Since its inception in 2007 we have helped to build six orphan centres around the country. The orphan centres are focused on alleviating the burden on guardians by providing day care facilities and after school care. The centres also aid in breaking the cycle of poverty by feeding, ensuring they receive the appropriate health care and instilling a sense of self-worth in the children.
